The city was founded in 1156 by Maharaja Rawal Jaisal, who traced his ancestry to the clan of Lord Krishna. Within a century, the area was taken over by the sultans of Delhi, who maintained their rule till the Rajputs defeated them in the 15th century. The Mughals were the next people to rule over the region, and after the empire disintegrated, the Marathas arrived here, who lost it to the British in 1818. Jaisalmer was given the status of a princely state by the British, which it held till 1947.
